Biography
元々は作家を志していたが中学時代に演劇を始め、プレストン大学にある劇団「マッカーター・シアター」で演技のレッスンを受けたことから俳優の道に進むことを決意。1985年、ジョー・ダンテ監督作「エクスプロラーズ」でデビューする。その後、学業に専念しカーネギーメロン大学に進むも、ピーター・ウィアー監督作品「いまを生きる」（89）でブレイクしたため、大学を退学し本格的に俳優の道へ進んだ。 以後、「生きてこそ」（94）や「ガタカ」（97）などで主演を務め、リチャード・リンクレイター監督作「ビフォア・サンライズ 恋人までの距離（ディスタンス）」（95）も人気を博す。また、同シリーズの続編「ビフォア・サンセット」（04）、「ビフォア・ミッドナイト」（13）では出演のほか共同脚本も手がけ、アカデミー脚色賞の候補となった。 アントワン・フークア監督の「トレーニング デイ」（01）とリンクレイター監督と12年にわたる撮影に参加した「6才のボクが、大人になるまで。」（14）で、アカデミー助演男優賞にノミネートされた。 その後も、チェット・ベイカーを演じた「ブルーに生まれついて」（15）や「マグニフィセント・セブン」（16）などで実力派として活躍し 、25年には再びリンクレイター監督と組んだ「ブルームーン」で伝説的作詞家ロレンツ・ハートを好演。第98回アカデミー賞で自身初の主演男優賞ノミネートを果たした。 私生活では、映画「ガタカ」で共演したユマ・サーマンと98年に結婚し（04年に離婚）、娘のマヤ・ホーク、息子のレボン・ホークも俳優として活躍している。
