テレビの中に入りたい冴えない毎日を過ごすティーンエイジャーのオーウェンにとって、毎週土曜日の22時30分から放送される謎めいたテレビ番組「ピンク・オペーク」は、生きづらい現実を忘れさせてくれる唯一の居場所だった。オーウェンは同じくこの番組に夢中なマディとともに、番組の登場人物と自分たちを重ね合わせるようになっていく。しかしある日、マディはオーウェンの前から姿を消してしまう。ひとり残されたオーウェンは、自分はいったい何者なのか、知りたい気持ちとそれを知ることの怖さとの間で身動きが取れないまま、時間だけが過ぎていく。

サンタ・サングレ聖なる血『サンタ・サングレ』は、サーカス団長のオルゴとその妻でブランコの名手コンチャと、息子フェニックスの、奇妙な物語である。彼らは、メキシコ・シティーの繁華街にあるグリンゴ・サーカスで働いていた。オルゴは女たらしで、サディスティックでセクシャルな関係を浴していた。現在の相手は“刺青の女”だ。コンチャは、狂信的にある偶像を崇拝していた。それは2人の男にレイプされ両腕を切り落とされサンタ・サングレ（聖なる血）を流した乙女の像である。フェニックスは繊細で感受性豊かな少年。孤独がちな彼には、刺青の女が連れてくる養女で6歳の少女アルマと、淡くかよいあう感受性の交流があった。しかしアルマは、哀れにも生まれながらの聾唖者だった。ある夜、オルゴの浮気の現場を掴まえたコンチャが彼の下腹部に硫酸をかける。激怒したオルゴは彼女の腕を切り落とし自らも喉を切って自殺する。この一部始終を目撃したフェニックスは、ショックのあまり精神を病み、施設に収容される。やがて成長し施設を出たフェニックスは、母親と奇妙な一心胴体芸を生み出す。何かに取り憑かれたようなコンチャの心と、フェニックスの腕が一体となって生まれるフリークス・ショー。コンチャの意志のままに、フェニックスは狂気の母親に代わって、身の毛もよだつような殺人を犯していく。
