家ニューヨークに住むベンは妻のマリアン、息子のデヴィッド（デイヴィー）と共に、ニューイングランドの閑静な田舎町にやってきた。新聞の広告で知った白亜の貸別荘を下見に来たのだ。内装と格安の賃貸料に魅力を感じた一家はその別荘を借りる事を即決、伯母のエリザベスも連れてきてバカンスを過ごす事にした。ところが、家主のアーノルドとロズの兄妹は既に旅行に出て不在で、「2階の部屋にこもりきりの年老いた母に毎日食事を与えてほしい」との置き手紙を残していた。マリアンは手紙に書かれた通り、毎日彼女のために食事を作り、部屋の前に置くが、全く食事をとった気配はなかった。やがて、一家を不気味な怪異現象が次々と襲い始める。

ナイト・オブ・ザ・リビング・デッドジョン・A・ルッソの原作を、CM監督出身のジョージ・A・ロメロが監督した歴史的作品であり、ゾンビ映画の記念碑的作品。全編に横溢するカニバリズムや反モラル的ラストなど当時のタブーに挑戦した内容は、根底に流れる独自のヒューマニズムが制作当時の世相を反映しており、賛否両論あったがロングランを続けた。結果として、ニューヨーク近代美術館にも所蔵されるカルト・クラシックとなっており、アメリカ国立フィルム登録簿に永久保存登録されている。父の墓参りの途中、バーバラと兄のジョニーは生ける屍に襲われる。兄を殺された恐怖と悲しみの中、バーバラは近くの民家に逃げ込む。民家には黒人青年のベンのほか、若いカップル、中年夫婦と大怪我を負ったその娘が集まってくるが、外部との連絡も取れないまま、周囲はゾンビの群れに取り囲まれていた。ドアや窓を塞ぎゾンビの侵入を防いだうえで脱出の方策を探るベンに対し、地下室に籠ることにこだわるハリーが対立する。ゾンビたちが人間を食い殺していることをテレビで知ったバーバラたちは、最寄りの避難所への脱出を試みる。
