外太空殺人小醜 (1988)拍攝外星人入侵題材的電影無外乎從兩方面入手：要麼筆調輕快，要麼手法沉重。其中並無捷徑可尋，也不可能草草繞過了事。但遺憾的是《外太空殺人小醜》仍然試圖尋找一條中庸之道，於是他們選中了“馬戲團”這個中介。想象一下所謂的驚天大陰謀就是一群穿著小醜服的外星侏儒在地球上大肆破壞，用激光射線槍把人類變成噴噴香閃閃亮的棉花糖——除了讓人眼花繚亂一番之外，恐怕很少有人能真正進入情節並真正理解。實際上《外太空殺人小醜》是一部具有強烈超現實主義風格的影片，幾乎沒有什麼娛樂性，核心題材也不那麼拿人眼球，所以有點不太容易令你坐下來，安安穩穩地把電影看完。而對於大多數人來説，如果一部關於外星小醜的電影拍的一點也不滑稽，那還有什麼可看的呢？不過幸運的是，在後來的一大堆類似題材的電影中，這一部算是優秀的了。
