黑天鵝片中妮妲莉飾演芭蕾舞蹈員妮娜，單純、沉靜、默默耕耘，一直被母親過份沉溺的庇蔭下成長，人生唯一目標就是成為一位崇高的職業舞者。一天，知名導演湯馬士（雲遜卡素）公開為新一季【天鵝湖】挑選新主角，消息一齣妮娜等多位舞蹈員躍躍欲試，然而導演只對妮娜的美色虎視膽膽，一己私慾竟然漠視其他學生實力，高調地欽點她為女主角白天鵝。湯馬士相當急進，對妮娜的要求很高，要她對劇中對立角色黑天鵝也迎刃有餘，不斷用難堪的激將法鞭撻和教導，令她心力交瘁。妮娜日以繼夜苦心練舞，卻怎也擺脱不了現實中純真性格，揣摩不到黑天鵝的高傲、狂莽、邪惡；加上她對湯馬士的攻勢欲言又止，結果被對方每天惡意批評；與此同時，隊中勁敵莉莉（美娜古妮絲）有意無意猜心挑釁，壓力面臨爆煲的她，發現自己開始陷入精神分裂──妮娜為了演活黑天鵝，竟孤注一擲，把這份心理狀態融入角色之中，挖掘出自己內心潛在的陰暗面，一發不可收拾……

剃須記本片是為一個長達一週的反戰示威而拍的，該示威的主題是“憤怒的藝術家反對戰爭”。當時，關於“越戰”的尖鋭爭論正在把美國人分成兩個陣營，而我們可以把這部影片看做是斯科塞斯的政治表態。全片長 6 分鐘，用恐怖的畫面表現了一個年輕人如何對自己的臉進行摧殘。該片參加了 1968 年在比利時舉辦的雅克·勒杜實驗電影節（Jacques Ledoux’s 1968 Festival of Experimental Cinema），並且獲得了“金色時光獎”（Le Prix de L’Age d’Or）。拍攝該片所用的 10 卷愛克發彩色膠片系由比利時電影藝術館讚助。由斯科塞斯自編自導的《剃須記》是一個關於自我毀滅的血腥寓言。
