In the final days of the Edo shogunate, a government commander enters Edo Castle to inspect the Ōoku. Ignoring warnings, he steps into a forbidden room where, 200 years before, Lady Oyuki, a favored concubine, was forced to commit suicide by Tokugawa Tsunayoshi over a suspected affair. Consumed by vengeance, her spirit continues to haunt all those involved in the tragedy.

헌병과 유령 (1958)다자와 헌병오장과 아키코는 나미지마 헌병소위의 질투를 뒤로 하고 결혼한다. 헌병대에서 기밀문서가 도둑맞는 사건이 일어나고, 소위의 음모로 누명을 뒤집어쓴 오장은 총살당한다. 오장의 동생 다자와 이등병은 형의 복수를 맹세하며 헌병대에 입소하고, 겁탈당한 아키코 역시 복수를 꿈꾸며 중국 대륙으로 향한다. 한편 소위의 앞에 다자와의 유령이 출몰하기 시작한다.

The Ghost of Kasane (1957)A blind masseur visits a samurai to request the return of a loan. The samurai kills him in anger, then has his servant dump the body in the Kasane swamp. However, the ghost of the masseur returns to haunt the samurai, who kills his wife by mistake and then goes to the swamp and drowns himself. 20 years later, the masseur's daughter unknowingly falls in love with the samurai's son who has been brought up to be a servant. After she is horribly disfigured in an accident, he plots to run away with another woman, but the path of their escape lies by the Kasane swamp...

망령의 괴묘저택 (1958)의사인 테츠이치로는 결핵에 걸린 아내 요리코의 건강을 위해 아내의 고향인 큐슈로 이사를 결심하고 허름하지만 넓은 저택으로 이사를 한다. 그리고 그 집에 병원도 열게 된다. 하지만 이사온 첫날부터 저택으로부터 이상한 기운을 느낀 요리코는 급기야 그녀의 목을 조르는 노파의 공격을 받는다. 처음에는 테츠이치로도 단순히 이사로 인한 스트레스와 요리코의 병이 원인이라고 생각하며 믿지 않았지만, 병원의 간호사까지 비슷한 경험을 하게 되면서 저택과 관련된 끔찍한 과거가 서서히 밝혀지게 된다.

토카이도 요츠야 괴담 (1959)명예가 없는 사무라이 이에몬은 짝사랑하는 오이와와 결혼하기 위해 그녀의 아버지를 죽인다. 아무것도 모르는 오이와는 이에몬과 결혼하지만, 다른 여자와 새로운 결혼을 하려는 탐욕적인 이에몬에게 결국 배신당한다. 하지만, 모든 것을 얻은 이에몬의 앞에 끔찍한 죽음을 맞은 오이와의 유령이 나타나고 이에몬은 광기에 휩싸인다. 일본 호러 장르에 큰 영향을 주었던 일본에서 가장 유명한 괴담을 영화화했다. 축축한 여름밤 한가운데 서늘함을 불러일으키는 사운드의 활용이 인상적이다.

지옥 (1960)대학생인 시로는 야지마 교수의 딸 유키코와 약혼식을 올린 날, 친구 타무라와 차를 타고 가던 중 실수로 사람을 치게 되고 도주한다. 자수를 결심한 시로는 유키코와 택시를 타지만 교통사고로 유키코마저 잃게 된다. 실의에 빠진 시로는 술로 시간을 보내다가 어머니가 병에 걸렸다는 소식을 듣고 집으로 돌아온다. 어느 날 야지마 교수 부부와 타무라가 시로의 아버지가 운영하는 양로원의 10주년 기념 행사에 참석하기 위해 시로를 방문한다. 모두가 모인 가운데 그들은 각자의 죄목에 따라 지옥으로 떨어지는데...
