사랑의 선택어린 시절, 엄마가 계부를 가위로 살해하는 장면을 목격한 뒤로 남들과 어울리지 못하고 혼자서 사는 미혼의 앤지는 낡은 인형을 가지고 정신불안정의 상태로 살아간다. 어느날, 자신의 아파트로 돌아가던 중 붉은 수염의 괴한으로부터 추행을 당할 뻔 했으나 가지고 있던 가위로 찔러 화를 면한다. 이웃에 사는 알렉스의 도움으로 충격으로부터 조금씩 회복을 하고 둘은 가까워지게 된다. 한편 앤지의 정신 상담을 해주는 카터 박사는 부인의 부정을 참지 못하고 부인의 정부를 살해한 뒤 앤지의 과거를 이용해 그녀에게 죄를 덮어씌우려고 한다. 덫에 걸린 앤지는 빈집에 갇히게 되고 그곳에서 카터 박사의 음모에 걸려들어 정신을 잃고 과거 속에서 헤매게 된다. 그러던 중 가짜 붉은 수염이 떨어져 있는 걸 발견하고 잠시 문이 열려진 틈을 타서 빠져나오게 되고 도리어 카터 박사가 갇혀버리고 만다. 마침 앤지를 찾으러 온 알렉스와 만나 사랑을 확인한다.
