オペラの怪人 (1925)舞台は19世紀のパリ、オペラ座(ガルニエ宮)。迷路のように張めぐらされる地下に、人々が “ファントム” と呼ぶ謎の男が住みついている。支配人はファントムの為に特等席を用意しているが、誰もその姿を見た者はいない。ファントムは母親からも疎まれるほど醜い骸骨のような顔で生まれつき、その顔を仮面で隠し、誰にも知られることなくオペラ座の地下で孤独に生き抜いてきた。姿は醜いが繊細な心と音楽の才能に恵まれたファントムは、劇場の若手オペラ歌手クリスティーヌの若さと美貌、そしてなによりその歌声に魅了され、歌の手ほどきをするようになる。クリスティーヌは声だけのファントムの存在に恐れを抱きながらも、ファントムの “天使の歌声” に魅了される。ファントムはクリスティーヌを愛していて、自分も愛されたいと強く願い、クリスティーヌを地下にさらう。しかしクリスティーヌには幼馴染の貴族ラウルの存在があった。

The insane man invites them in, answers their questions, and submits to an examination of his eyes by one of the officers, who proclaims him innocent. The insane man invites them to stay and relax awhile, then regales them with his theories of crime. His heart begins to beat louder. Angles on the set are skewed to suggest the man's internal disarray.
