ナイト・オブ・ザ・リビング・デッドジョン・A・ルッソの原作を、CM監督出身のジョージ・A・ロメロが監督した歴史的作品であり、ゾンビ映画の記念碑的作品。全編に横溢するカニバリズムや反モラル的ラストなど当時のタブーに挑戦した内容は、根底に流れる独自のヒューマニズムが制作当時の世相を反映しており、賛否両論あったがロングランを続けた。結果として、ニューヨーク近代美術館にも所蔵されるカルト・クラシックとなっており、アメリカ国立フィルム登録簿に永久保存登録されている。父の墓参りの途中、バーバラと兄のジョニーは生ける屍に襲われる。兄を殺された恐怖と悲しみの中、バーバラは近くの民家に逃げ込む。民家には黒人青年のベンのほか、若いカップル、中年夫婦と大怪我を負ったその娘が集まってくるが、外部との連絡も取れないまま、周囲はゾンビの群れに取り囲まれていた。ドアや窓を塞ぎゾンビの侵入を防いだうえで脱出の方策を探るベンに対し、地下室に籠ることにこだわるハリーが対立する。ゾンビたちが人間を食い殺していることをテレビで知ったバーバラたちは、最寄りの避難所への脱出を試みる。

怪物の花嫁田舎町の沼で謎の失踪事件が続発。土地の警察のディック・クレイグ警部補(トニー・マッコイ)が捜査に乗り出そうとしたところ、そこへ新聞記者をしている婚約者ジャネット(ロレッタ・キング)が現れる。ネタをつかんだ彼女は沼のほとりの屋敷が怪しいとにらみ、調査をはじめるがほどなく何者かに捕らわれる。屋敷の主はヴォーノフ博士(ベラ・ルゴシ)というマッド・サイエンティスト。彼女を捕らえたのは博士の忠実な下僕で、姿形は野蛮だが、純粋な男ロボ(トー・ジョンソン)だった。時を同じくしてヴォーノフを追って屋敷を訪れた怪奇現象の権威、ストロースキー教授に、ヴォーノフは自らの原子力に関係する独自の研究の成果により、いずれ全世界を彼が創造した原子の超人が征服するだろうと演説をぶつ。ストロースキーは、博士が造った大ダコの餌食となり、いよいよ狂気の魔手がジャネットに及ばんとしたとき、ジャネットに魅せられたロボが博士を制止。そこへディックが登場。大格闘の末、自ら実験台になった博士は強力なパワーで逃亡、しかし駆けつけた警官らに囲まれ、結局沼に転落、大ダコと大格闘の末果てるのであった。
