遊星からの物体X1982年の南極。ノルウェー隊のヘリが、1匹の犬を追ってアメリカ南極観測隊第4基地へ現れた。銃や手榴弾を使い執拗に犬を狙うが失敗し、手違いからヘリは爆発。一人生き残ったノルウェー隊員は基地内へ逃げた犬を追って銃撃を続け、基地の隊員を負傷させるが基地の隊長により射殺される。ノルウェー基地へ向かったヘリ操縦士のマクレディらが見つけたものは、自殺し凍りついた隊員の死体、何かを取り出したと思しき氷塊、そして異様に変形し固まったおぞましい焼死体だった。一行は調査のため、記録フィルムと焼死体を持ち帰る。

アナイアレイション -全滅領域-軍の退役後、生物学教授として大学にて教鞭をとるレナのもとに1年前の極秘任務に赴いたまま行方不明だった夫ケインが突然現れる。しかし、ケインは記憶が曖昧で、どうやって家に戻ったのかすら理解できていない。ケインはその後、容態を崩し、病院への搬送中、軍によってレナとともに拘束され研究施設に連れていかれる。施設でレナは心理学者のヴェントレスによってケインが危篤状態であると告げられ、ケインはこの施設の外に広がるシマーと呼ばれるエリアからの唯一の生存者であると説明される。レナはベントレスがシマーを物理学者のジョージー・ラデク、人類学者のキャス・シェパード救急医療隊員のアーニャ・ソレンセンを率いて調査することを知り、この探検隊への参加を自ら志願する。
