Käesolevasse raamatusse on koondatud kirjaniku kaalukamad lühiromaanid ja jutustused, mis avavad tema Cthulhu-mütoloogia kosmilist tausta ja tutvustavad kaugeid planeete ning võõraid dimensioone, kust selle kummalise panteoni jumalad ja asukad omal ajal Maale saabusid. Lisaks leiab siit ka kirjaniku tähelepanuväärsemaid lühipalu, milles ta esmakordselt tutvustas lugejaile vaid talle ainuomast nn. Lovecrafti maakonda – Arkhami, Miskatonicu jt paikade Uus-Inglismaad.
