The AlphabetPrima di diventare famoso per film e serie televisive cult, David Lynch realizzò una serie di cortometraggi nei quali possiamo ritrovare gran parte della sua poetica. Uno dei più interessanti è sicuramente The Alphabet, incubo (ed ispirato da un incubo reale, pare) sulle lettere. Sospeso tra una prima parte in cui domina la ricerca pittorica e figurativa, tipica della prima fase (vedi il corto Six Figures Getting Sick), ed una seconda recitata in live action, il corto mostra come le lettere escano dolorosamente dagli oggetti che loro stesse creano per entrare -altrettanto dolorosamente- nel corpo umano reificato.
