Nei sotterranei del castello sono situati il laboratorio e le prigioni che ospitano un gruppo di povere creature rese idiote e deformi dalle precedenti fallimentari operazioni tentate da Cadman. Ramsey si accorge ben presto che le scelte dello scienziato non rispondondo propriamente ai dettami dell'etica professionale, ma, vittima degli effetti del "sonno nero", rimane involontariamente coinvolto nella tragica vicenda.
