La légende BlairAprès avoir visionné une vidéo sur Internet, James se convainc que sa sœur, disparue depuis un séjour dans les bois, est toujours en vie. Ces images, tournées par un amateur en proie à la terreur dans une maison décrépite, laissent en effet brièvement voir une silhouette féminine. Il n’en faut pas davantage à James pour persuader deux de ses amis ainsi qu’un couple de chasseurs de fantômes de l’accompagner dans la forêt de Burkittsville, au Maryland, afin de réaliser un documentaire sur ses recherches. Chacun, pourvu d’une minicaméra, pourra ainsi capter en temps réel toutes les pistes qui s’ouvriront à eux. Après une première nuit de camping relativement calme, des événements inexpliqués et effrayants commencent à se produire, qui perturbent l’équilibre du groupe.

Willow CreekJim est convaincu de l’existence du sasquatch, cet insaisissable homme-bête qu’on surnomme Bigfoot et qui hanterait les régions sauvages de la côte Ouest américaine. Kelly, la petite amie de Jim, n’en est pas si sûre. Mais elle aime Jim et se dit que de l’accompagner lors de son périple pour tourner un documentaire maison en cherchant la célèbre créature est une façon comme une autre de passer le temps entre deux contrats comme actrice. Le couple se rend en voiture jusqu’au comté de Trinity, en Californie, jusqu’à l’endroit où le fameux clip de Patterson-Gimlin, qui montrait prétendument le mystérieux monstre en mouvement en 1967. En arrivant à Willow Creek, ils discutent avec divers gens de l’endroit. Certains habitants sont heureux de parler avec eux, alors que d’autres font preuve d’appréhension. Leurs avertissements deviennent de plus en plus agressifs. Le fond des bois n’est pas un endroit pour un couple naïf de la ville – comme Jim et Kelly vont bientôt le découvrir!
