Publicado originalmente como «The Mask of the Red Death: A Fantasy») es un cuento del escritor estadounidense Edgar Allan Poe, publicado por primera vez en 1842. La historia sigue los intentos del príncipe Próspero por evitar una peligrosa plaga, conocida como la Muerte Roja, escondiéndose en su abadía. Él, junto con muchos otros nobles acaudalados, organiza un baile de máscaras en siete habitaciones de la abadía, cada una decorada con un color diferente. En medio de su desenfreno, entra una misteriosa figura disfrazada de víctima de la Muerte Roja y se abre paso por cada una de las salas. Próspero muere tras enfrentarse a este extraño, cuyo «disfraz» demuestra no contener nada tangible en su interior; los invitados también mueren uno a uno.
