A Daughter Of Destiny (1928)Professor Jakob ten Brinken hat es geschafft, künstliche Tiere zum Leben zu erwecken. Nun will der fanatische Wissenschaftler durch künstliche Befruchtung herausfinden, ob der Lebensweg eines Menschen durch seine Gene oder durch sein Umfeld bestimmt wird. Dafür verwendet er den Samen eines gehenkten Mörders und befruchtet damit eine Prostituierte. Ten Brinken sorgt für das wohlbehütete und christliche Aufwachsen des Kindes, das er als seine Nichte ausgibt. Doch trotz aller Fürsorge entwickelt sich Alraune zu einer gefühlskalten und intriganten Frau, die Männern den Kopf verdreht, um sie in den Abgrund zu treiben. Auch an ihrem “Schöpfer” nimmt sie schließlich grausame Rache.

Salomé (1923)Salome, Stieftochter des Herodes, will den gefangen gehaltenen Propheten Jochanaan sehen und verliebt sich in ihn. Weil Jochanaan auf ihre Verführungsversuche nicht reagiert und ihr einen Kuss verweigert, rächt sich Salome: Sie tanzt für Herodes den „Tanz der Sieben Schleier“ und fordert dafür den Kopf Jochanaans in einer silbernen Schüssel.

Der Magier (1926)Oliver Haddo (Paul Wegener) glaubt fest daran, ein großer Magier zu sein. Mit Hilfe einer alten Zauberformel aus dem Mittelalter will er in seinem Labor Leben aus toter Materie erschaffen. Dafür braucht er das Blut einer Jungfrau. Deshalb zwingt Haddo der schönen Margaret (Alice Terry) hypnotisch seinen Willen auf. Sie verlässt ihren Verlobten, den Chirurgen Arthur Burdon (Iván Petrovich) und reist mit dem verrückten Magier nach Monte Carlo....

Der Fuhrmann des Todes (1921)In einer Silvesternacht erinnern drei Säufer an eine Legende. Diese besagt, dass die letzte Person, die im alten Jahr stirbt, vom Tod verpflichtet wird, für die Dauer des Folgejahres die Seelen der Verstorbenen in seiner Kutsche einzusammeln, bis die Bürde am Ende des Jahres auf eine neue Person übertragen wird.

The Devil and the Statue (1901)At the beginning of the scene Romeo in his gondola sings to Juliet a sentimental song, then goes away. Hardly has he departed when the colonnade falls to pieces, disclosing the devil. Juliet, frightened, runs to the window and calls Romeo. The latter attempts to enter and protect his fiancée, but at a gesture from the devil the window is instantly covered with a grating and Romeo makes frantic efforts to break it. The devil begins to dance a wild dance before Juliet, who is beside herself from terror. The devil gradually becomes the size of a giant (a novel effect). Juliet implores the statue of Madonna, which becomes animated, descends from its pedestal, and stretching out its arms orders the devil to disappear. (Méliès Catalog)
