In der ganzen tschechischen Stadt scheint jeder ein Kind zu haben, nur eben Karel und Bozena Horák nicht. Eines Tages gräbt Karel vor seinem kleinen Ferienhaus einen Baumstumpf aus, der nach einigen zuschneiden die Form eines Babys hat. Bozena hat plötzlich ein Kind, selbst eine neunmonatige Schwangerschaft wird den Nachbarn vorgegaukelt, bis „Otik“ zum Leben erwachen darf. Und wie es nun mal ist, der Holzstumpf erwacht wirklich zum Leben und hat einen unstillbaren Hunger, selbst vor Menschen macht er nicht mehr halt. Die Horáks versuchen alles, um ihren „Otesánek“ zu verheimlichen. Nur die junge Nachbarstochter Alzbetka erkennt die Lügen der Familie Horák und findet in einen Kinderbuch die Geschichte über „Otesánek“...
