イギリス出身。7歳の時に父親が他界し、14歳で家族とオーストラリアに移住する。シドニーの演技学校で学んだ後「For Love Alone」（86）でスクリーンデビュー。その後ハリウッドへ渡り、「タンク・ガール」（95）や「娼婦ベロニカ」（98）などに出演する。2001年、デビッド・リンチ監督作「マルホランド・ドライブ」の演技で国際的に絶賛を浴び、スター女優に。「リング」のハリウッドリメイク「ザ・リング」（02）、ショーン・ペン共演の「21グラム」（03）、「キング・コング」（05）などに出演し、「21グラム」（03）と「インポッシブル」（12）でアカデミー主演女優賞の候補となった。以降の出演作に「バードマン あるいは（無知がもたらす予期せぬ奇跡）」（14）、「雨の日は会えない、晴れた日は君を想う」（15）、製作総指揮を兼ねた「アバウト・レイ 16歳の決断」（ともに15）、「バイス」（18）、「ルース・エドガー」（19）、「コンティニュー」（21）など。
