Biography
米ジョージア州コンヤーズ出身。10代の頃から演劇に親しみ、カーネギーメロン大学の演劇科に進学。大学卒業後、ニューヨークで舞台女優としてキャリアをスタートさせ、1982年にロサンゼルスへ。コーエン兄弟の「赤ちゃん泥棒」（87）の主演で脚光を浴び、「ブロードキャスト・ニュース」（87）でベルリン国際映画祭の銀熊賞（最優秀女優賞）を受賞、アカデミー主演女優賞に初ノミネートを果たす。93年の「ピアノ・レッスン」でカンヌ国際映画祭の最優秀主演女優賞を受賞したほか、アカデミー賞をはじめ各国の映画賞を総なめにした。同年の「ザ・ファーム 法律事務所」でアカデミー助演女優賞にもノミネートされた。その後、製作総指揮を兼ねた「サーティーン あの頃欲しかった愛のこと」（03）で再びアカデミー助演女優賞の候補となった。近年の映画出演作に「バットマン vs スーパーマン ジャスティスの誕生」（16）、「ビッグ・シック ぼくたちの大いなる目ざめ」（17）などがある。
