The Empty House and Other Ghost Stories表題作の冒頭、主人公のジム・ショートハウスは、町で幽霊が出ると噂される屋敷を調査するよう、叔母のジュリアから呼び出されます。興味を惹かれつつも躊躇していたショートハウスは、叔母が週末にその屋敷の壁の奥に隠された謎を解き明かすため、鍵を手に入れたことを知ります。やがて二人は、かつてそこで起きた殺人事件という暗い歴史を知り、それが彼らの冒険に緊迫感と緊張感を与えます。屋敷の奥深くへと進むにつれ、奇妙な出来事が発生し、恐怖が募っていきます。それは二人の覚悟を試すと同時に、屋敷の不気味な存在感を浮き彫りにしていきます。この導入部は、恐怖と超自然的な現象への探求の舞台を整え、読者をショートハウスと叔母の不穏な旅へと誘います。
