Biography
Née le 29 août 2000 dans la préfecture d'Ishikawa, au Japon, Minami Hamabe est repérée très tôt par Toho Entertainment après avoir remporté le New Generation Award lors de la 7e audition Cendrillon Tōhō. Elle fait ses débuts à l'écran à douze ans dans Ace Attorney de Takashi Miike (2012), avant d'enchaîner les apparitions au cinéma et à la télévision. Sa notoriété prend de l'ampleur en 2017 avec Je veux manger ton pancréas, comédie romantique dramatique de Shō Tsukikawa qui devient le cinquième film le plus rentable de l'année au Japon. Elle y incarne une lycéenne atteinte d'une maladie grave, performance qui lui vaut le prix de la meilleure nouvelle venue aux Japan Academy Film Prize. Elle poursuit avec Le Pays imaginaire promis (2020) et la série Kakegurui, s'imposant dans les adaptations de manga en live-action. C'est en 2023 que son visage dépasse les frontières du Japon grâce à Godzilla Minus One de Takashi Yamazaki, phénomène mondial et premier film de la franchise à remporter l'Oscar des meilleurs effets visuels en 2024. Elle y tient le rôle féminin principal.
