Heath Andrew Ledger (* 4. April 1979 in Perth, Western Australia; † 22. Januar 2008 in New York City, New York) war ein australischer Schauspieler. Für seine Darstellung des Jokers in The Dark Knight wurde er im Jahr 2009 postum mit dem Oscar als Bester Nebendarsteller ausgezeichnet. Mit siebzehn Jahren verließ Ledger die Schule und ging nach Sydney, wo er als Schauspieler arbeiten wollte. Er entschied sich bewusst gegen den Besuch einer Schauspielschule. Seinen ersten Auftritt hatte Ledger 1992 in der australischen Fernsehserie Der Traum vom Clown (Clowning Around). Weiterhin spielte er auch in den Fernsehserien Leinen los! (Ship to Shore) im Jahr 1993 und Sweat – Der Weg zum Sieg (1996). Danach zog er nach Hollywood. Nach weiteren Rollen, darunter eine in Der Patriot von Roland Emmerich neben Mel Gibson, gelang Ledger 2001 mit der Hauptrolle in Ritter aus Leidenschaft der Durchbruch. Nach ersten Fernsehrollen etablierte sich Ledger ab Ende der 1990er Jahre als Hollywood-Schauspieler. Erfolge bei Publikum und Kritik feierte er mit Der Patriot, Monster’s Ball mit Billy Bob Thornton und Halle Berry und als homosexueller Cowboy in dem Drama Brokeback Mountain, für dessen Darstellung er 2006 als Bester Schauspieler für einen Oscar nominiert wurde. Durch Filme wie 10 Dinge, die ich an Dir hasse wurde Ledger eher dem Teeniefilm zugeordnet. Ein kommerzieller Misserfolg war der Film Sin Eater – Die Seele des Bösen mit Benno Fürmann. Weitere Angebote im Genre Teeniefilm lehnte Ledger daraufhin ab. Bereits mit Monster’s Ball und der Neuverfilmung von Die vier Federn kündigte sich sein Rollenwechsel an. Spätestens seit dem Jahr 2005 war Heath Ledger mit seinem Erscheinen in Brothers Grimm und Brokeback Mountain im ernsten Rollenfach etabliert. Ein nächstes Projekt wurde die Bob-Dylan-Biografie I’m Not There. Dort spielte Ledger eine der sechs Rollen, die den Rockmusiker verkörperten. In der Batman-Verfilmung The Dark Knight stellte Ledger den Joker dar. In diesem Film spielte er gleichzeitig seine letzte vollständige Rolle.
