The Masque of the Red DeathDie Maske des Roten Todes“ (ursprünglich veröffentlicht als „The Mask of the Red Death: A Fantasy“) ist eine Kurzgeschichte des amerikanischen Schriftstellers Edgar Allan Poe, die erstmals 1842 veröffentlicht wurde. Die Geschichte folgt den Versuchen des Prinzen Prospero, einer gefährlichen Pest, bekannt als der Rote Tod, zu entgehen, indem er sich in seiner Abtei versteckt. Gemeinsam mit vielen anderen wohlhabenden Adligen veranstaltet er einen Maskenball in sieben Räumen der Abtei, die jeweils in einer anderen Farbe dekoriert sind. Mitten in ihrem ausgelassenen Treiben tritt eine mysteriöse Gestalt auf, die als Opfer des Roten Todes verkleidet ist, und schreitet durch jeden der Räume. Prospero stirbt nach der Konfrontation mit diesem Fremden, dessen „Kostüm“ sich als völlig leer erweist; auch die Gäste sterben einer nach dem anderen. Die Geschichte wurde erstmals im Mai 1842 im Graham's Magazine veröffentlicht und seither in vielen verschiedenen Formen adaptiert, darunter in einem Film von 1964 mit Vincent Price in der Hauptrolle. Poes Kurzgeschichte wurde auch in vielen anderen Werken verschiedener Medienarten angedeutet.
